U.S. Visa Update for Nigerian Passport Holders: What You Need to Know About the New Visa Bond Requirement

The United States government has announced a major change to its B-1/B-2 visitor visa program that may affect some Nigerian passport holders applying for business or tourist visas.

Effective 3 August 2026, U.S. consular officers may require certain applicants from designated countries, including Nigeria, to post a refundable visa bond ranging from $10,000 to $20,000 before a visa is issued.

It is important to note that this is not a mandatory payment for every Nigerian visa applicant. The decision is made on a case-by-case basis by the U.S. consular officer during the visa application process. Applicants should not make any payment unless they are officially instructed to do so by the U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

According to the U.S. government, the bond is intended to encourage compliance with U.S. immigration laws and reduce visa overstays. If the visa holder follows all visa conditions and leaves the United States within the authorized period (or otherwise complies with immigration requirements), the bond is generally refundable in accordance with the program’s rules.

The policy follows a one-year pilot program introduced in 2025. After reviewing the results, the U.S. State Department decided to make the program permanent and increased the maximum bond amount from $15,000 to $20,000.

Nigerian passport holders planning to visit the United States should ensure they provide accurate information during their visa application, demonstrate strong ties to Nigeria, and comply fully with U.S. immigration requirements.
